Hydroponic plant cultivation is no longer just a laboratory experiment; thanks to the combination of science and innovation, it is becoming a reality in modern agriculture. At GreeenTech, we believe that cooperation between scientists and technology companies is the key to sustainable production. That is why we have joined forces with the Institute of Experimental Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

Joint research: optimizing plant growth in hydroponics

From 2022 to 2024, the project “Optimization of nutrient solution for growing leafy vegetables and herbs in a hydroponic system” was carried out, which was financially supported by the Czech Academy of Sciences as part of its regional cooperation program. The aim of the research was to optimize the composition of the nutrient solution so that hydroponic systems achieve higher yields, better quality, and energy efficiency. The scientific team led by RNDr. Radka Podlipná, Ph.D., investigated, among other things:

• the optimal concentration of nutrients and trace elements,

• the use of hydrogen peroxide to limit algae growth,

• the effect of silicon fertilizers on plant nutrition and vitality.

The tests showed that low doses of hydrogen peroxide can improve plant quality while preventing algae from clogging the system – a simple and affordable solution with a significant impact on the efficiency of hydroponics.

Science in practice: GreeenTech farm in the AV ČR laboratory

Based on these successful results, in 2025 we jointly installed a new hydroponic system directly in the AV ČR laboratory. Here, scientists are continuing further experiments with various types of vegetables and herbs to verify the influence of different nutrients and environmental factors on the growth, taste, and nutritional value of plants. The goal is to transfer scientific knowledge from the laboratory into practice – into schools, restaurants, offices, and public spaces. Thanks to this research, we can continuously improve our Urbi. farms, which help customers grow locally, healthily, and without pesticides.

A shared vision: science that grows

Together with the AV ČR team, we are currently preparing a proposal for another three-year regional cooperation project (2026–2028), which will focus on new nutrients, plant species, and the application of scientific knowledge in real-world operations. The planned results include not only practical recommendations for hydroponic farm operators, but also professional articles in international journals.

This partnership shows how science and technology can grow side by side – and how research-based innovation can shape a more sustainable future for modern food production.
